Palace Theatre seeks memories for centenary celebrations

Posted onPosted on 11th Mar

The Palace Theatre in Newark is celebrating its 100th birthday this year and, as part of the celebrations, it is asking people with memories of the theatre to share their stories and memorabilia from throughout its history.

It is hoped that the theatre will be able to document its full and varied history with the help of the public and memories are particularly sought from the years between 1920 and 1986 as few records have been preserved in their collection from this time.

It is also hoping to find out more about the theatre’s founder, Emily Blagg – an inspirational women of her time.

A first Memory Morning, on Thursday, 27th February, unearthed some fascinating finds, including historic brochures and a visit, all the way from Yorkshire, from the grandson of the Palace Theatre’s commissionaire in the 50s.

The theatre is hosting another Memory Morning on Saturday, 28th March to which members of the public are invited to bring their photos, brochures, memorabilia and more about the theatre and its founder, Emily Blagg.

The theatre team will be on hand from 10am to 12noon, making a record of items and taking a register of people who have interesting stories and memories to share orally, and will arrange times to make recordings or videos.

Contributions from the public will add to a fascinating exhibition about the Palace’s history, planned to open on its stage this September. The free exhibition, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, will celebrate the Theatre being centre stage in Newark for 100 years and will tie in with the nationwide Heritage Open Days scheme.
