Newark-based charity Beaumond House Hospice Care has announced details of its annual Light Up A Life service, giving supporters the chance to remember those they’ve lost in the run-up to Christmas.
Taking place at St Mary Magdalene Church in Newark on Wednesday, 9th December at 6.30pm, the service will incorporate readings, songs, and time for reflection.
Guests will also be able to light candles, hang personalised tags on a Christmas tree, and make dedications to loved ones online, which will be displayed on a virtual tree of remembrance.
One supporter who will be attending the service is Shirley, whose husband John was cared for by Beaumond House after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.
She said: “John was a devoted family man. He would do anything for anyone if he could. About two months after his diagnosis, his mobility started to decline and I was struggling to cope.
“The support from Beaumond House made a huge difference — it helped take some of the pressure off me and meant I could spend time being John’s wife, rather than always being his carer.
“I first attended Light Up A Life the first Christmas after John died. Being able to pause, reflect, light a candle, and remember him alongside others who understood was incredibly important.
“Since then, my daughter has attended with me and together we’ve found comfort in the event and everything it represents. It brings a sense of peace during a very difficult time.”
Caroline Swindin, head of fundraising at Beaumond House Hospice Care, added: “Light Up A Life is such a special event, bringing the community together to support one another as we remember loved ones at what can be a difficult time of year.
“Christmas is a time for celebration with family and friends, so it can feel hard when people are missing from the festivities, but the Light up a Life service helps us find comfort by talking about those we’ve lost and remembering the happy times.
“We welcome dedications and attendance from everyone — not just those with a connection to Beaumond House — and your donations will help us continue to support patients and families at a time when every moment matters.”
Supporters can now make dedications online ahead of the service. To make a dedication and book tickets for the service, go to www.beaumondhouse.co.uk/events/light-up-a-life
