Visitors to Newark Castle will be able to travel 800 years back in time on Saturday 23rd April as this local landmark plays host to a medieval fun day for all the family.
Activities, entertainers and re-enactors will bring the age of chivalry to life at this free event running from 10am to 4pm. Guests will be able to have a go at archery and watch a long bow demonstration from Newark Castle Archers, be entertained by minstrels, learn some jester skills and even play on an inflatable gladiator joust.
There’ll be birds of prey from Falconry UK to meet up close too with the chance to hold one for a small fee, as well as the sight of St George and the dragon stilt walkers.
The castle’s Undercroft will be the stage for performances from ‘The World’s Toughest Knight’ Sir William Marshall who will tell his knight’s tale from serving five kings of England to fighting in 500 jousting competitions, crusading in Palestine, defeating Richard the Lionheart in single combat, fighting a battle in his 70s and almost being fired out of a catapult when he was six years- old.
The day will also offer the rare chance to venture inside the tower and debtors dungeon, which will both be open to the public, providing unique photo opportunities.
The Newark Castle Comes To Life: Medieval Marvels event is free to attend and is one of three events at the Castle this year which have been organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council and are able to take place thanks to funding from The Gilstrap Charity. From Saturday 30th to Sunday 31st July, visitors can look forward to a 17th Century living history weekend while Saturday 17th September will see this year’s Heritage Open Days theme of Astounding Inventions playfully explored in the grounds.
