The inaugural Women’s and Girls’ Festival of Cricket at Farnsfield Cricket Club was a great success with many people having a go at the sport for the first time.
International women’s umpire Sue Redfern, together with Kathryn Bryce and Georgie Boyce, professional players with The Blaze franchise based at Trent Bridge, attended.
Sue umpired the first match of the festival and shared her expertise with attending players, umpires, and visitors.
Kathryn and Georgie gave demonstrations of batting and bowling as well as coaching some of the younger visitors in the nets.
The women’s and girls’ Farnsfield team play in the East Midlands Women’s Softball Cricket League and, although only newly-formed, have grown in confidence and ability and won many matches.
Luce Brailsford shone with the bat and is the second highest scorer in the league, while Emma Turner is joint top wicket-taker. Five other Farnsfield players are also in the top 10 wicket takers in the league.
Farnsfield women train on a Sunday morning and Monday evening during the summer at their Station Lane ground in Farnsfield. On Friday evenings junior girls’ training sessions are organised at the same venue.
The club said the aim is not only to learn and improve cricket skills but also to have fun.
Farnsfield CC provides cricket for all ages and abilities, ranging from KwikCricket for the very youngest, through age-group hardball cricket and on to adult cricket.
The club runs three senior teams in the Bassetlaw League. There is also a Sunday team, a Sunday development team, and now a women’s team.
