Race showcases the best of Newark

Posted onPosted on 6th Sep

Huge crowds gathered in Newark, Southwell, and across the region as some of the world’s best cyclists raced in Stage Four of the Tour of Britain.

Newark again hosted a stage finish in Sconce and Devon Park as the cyclists raced over 86 miles from Derby.
The stage win was claimed by French cyclist Paul Magnier for team Soudal Quick-Step, who later received a Sherwood Forest oak sapling from Newark and Sherwood District Council chairman Coun Jean Hall.

East Midlands mayor Claire Ward said: “I’m so proud that they’ve come heare, and it’s a great opportunity to showcase the East Midlands — people will be watching the race not just in the UK, but across the world too.

“They’ll see all our favourite parts of our communities and towns.

“It is great for our local economy too. It’s good weather and people will be out and about, and they’ll stop off for a cup of tea or a bite to eat.”

Paul Peacock, leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, added: “It’s a good atmosphere and it’s great to have the tour here again.”
