Amy Hunt – Golden history girl

Share:

Amy Hunt made history in August as she became the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single European Athletics Championships, completing an extraordinary week for the Newark sprinter on home soil.

Amy sealed her fourth title in dramatic fashion at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, anchoring Great Britain to victory in the inaugural mixed 4×100-metre relay.

The British quartet of Jeremiah Azu, Dina Asher-Smith, Zharnel Hughes, and Amy stormed to victory in a European-record time of 39.97 seconds, finishing ahead of Germany and Spain.

She ran the final leg to provide a fitting conclusion to her remarkable championships.

Receiving the baton with Germany close behind, Hunt produced a powerful finish to move past Germany’s Gina Lückenkemper and bring Britain home first.

As she crossed the line, Hunt held up four fingers to celebrate the achievement.

Her historic medal haul had began with victory in the women’s 100 metres, where she claimed her first individual European title. She then completed the sprint double by winning the 200 metres in 22.19 seconds, holding off Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke and Dina in a thrilling final.

Amy’s third gold came as part of the British women’s 4x100m relay team. Alongside Dina, Success Eduan and Imani Lansiquot, she helped Britain win in 42.05 seconds, adding another title to what had already become a remarkable championship.

But Amy was not finished.

The mixed relay gave her the opportunity to make European Championship history, and she delivered when it mattered most.

The victory meant she had won all four events she entered, an achievement never previously accomplished at a single edition of the championships.

Remarkably, Amy competed in seven races over seven days and won every one. Her achievement made her one of the defining stars of the Birmingham championships and provided one of the most memorable performances in British athletics.

After securing her unprecedented fourth gold medal, the 24-year-old Cambridge University graduate said: “I am over the moon. It was incredible and I loved the opportunity of a new event.

“It was just what we needed, a nice bit of newness, because we don’t get that very often.

“It’s just a dream come true — I’ll remember this week for the rest of my life.”

Reflecting further on the remarkable week, she added: “I surpassed my expectations for myself at these champs, how I’ve handled the pressure.

“It was a bit like when you’re queueing for a rollercoaster and you’re a little nervous and you’re seeing the drops and stuff. Then when you get off you want to do it again.”

After a late change to the quartet’s line-up for the mixed sprint relay, Amy revealed she had only practised the baton change with Zharnel an hour before the race!
