Sleeping rough to help the homeless

Posted onPosted on 16th Mar

Caring members of the Newark community spent the night sleeping rough in sub-zero temperatures to raise awareness and money for the homeless, writes Rachel Jones.

The Big Newark Sleep Out was organised by three local charities – Newark Emmaus Trust, which helps young homeless people; mental health awareness charity Shawmind Foundation; and the YMCA Newark and Sherwood. The annual event was sponsored by letting agents Buttercross Estates, and hosted by the YMCA Community Activity Centre.

The Big Newark Sleep Out aims to replicate conditions that homeless people face every night in a bid to raise awareness and break down stereotypes.

Thirty-six people from the community and charities spent the night sleeping rough in the cold, using cardboard for shelter. So far they have raised more than £12,000 and money can still be donated here.

Sharon Richardson, fundraising and communications manager at The Newark Emmaus Trust, said events like the sleep out were important.

“The Big Newark Sleep Out provided a flavour of the life of a rough sleeper for just one night,” she added. “Its purpose was to raise money for those who have no option but to sleep out every night.

“Thousands of people sleep rough each night across the country. Prolonged rough sleeping makes it more likely for them to face challenges through trauma, mental health, and drug misuse. We hope we have brought this issue to the attention of the local community differently and memorably.”

Money raised will go towards the three charities to improve the mental health and lives of homeless people in the region.

Sharon said: “The cost-of-living crisis is having a huge effect on us all, not least the charity sector. Funds raised will help to alleviate the impact. It will also help to keep young people off the streets and to become more self-reliant and independent.”

Donations will continue to be accepted until 24th March. Click here to donate.
