Sleep out success for a fourth year

Posted onPosted on 24th Mar

More than £9,000 was raised as the fourth Big Newark Sleep Out brought together people to spend a night outdoors and raise awareness of the challenges of homelessness.

Held at YMCA Community and Activity Village in the town, money raised from the event will support YMCA Newark and Sherwood’s Scholarship Programme and Newark Emmaus Trust.

Organisers said: “For most of us, it’s just one night, but for some young people, this is their reality every night.

“That’s the part that really hits home. Seeing so many people come together, brave the cold, and support local young people is amazing.

“The Big Newark Sleep Out is about shining a light on this reality and taking action together as a community.

“Every year, we make a difference. Together, we raise the profile of the young homeless in our town and highlight the critical issue of mental health care within our community.

“The Sleep Out continues to grow thanks to incredible support from local people and businesses.”

Funds raised for YMCA Newark and Sherwood will support its Scholarship Programme, helping children and young people access activities they might otherwise miss due to financial hardship, from sport and climbing to youth programmes and holiday camps.

Newark Emmaus Trust will use its share of donations to provide supported housing and life skills support for young people aged 16 to 25, including young parents, helping them move towards independence.

Nikki Burley, chief executive of Newark Emmaus Trust, said money raised would make a real difference, helping the charity to provide safe accommodation and the support young people need to rebuild their lives.

Headline sponsor Buttercross Estates raised more than £1,485, Newark Emmaus Trust more than £1,200, and MES Building Solutions more than £1,031.

The YMCA Children’s Residential Care team raised more than £900, Newark Rowing Club more than £700, YMCA Supported Housing more than £600, Aly Greenway’s team more than £500, Nottingham Building Society more than £400, Hope After Dark more than £300.

“We are proud to be suppporting YMCA Newark & Sherwood and The Newark Emmaus Trust,” said the managing director of Buttercross Estates, Daniel Otton.

“At Buttercross Estates, we’re passionate about supporting our community, and the Big Newark Sleep Out is an incredibly powerful way to do that.

“Spending a night outside gives you just a glimpse of the challenges faced by vulnerable people every day, and it’s an honour to help raise awareness and funds for such a vital cause.”
