Nottinghamshire Police has added a range of new hybrid and economic cars to the force’s fleet.
Five new Toyota Yaris cars and five new Aygos will be added as part of the force’s progression to greener technology. The Yaris cars are self-charging, economic on fuel – doing up to 105 miles per gallon – and can be switched to either full electric or a combination of petrol and electric. They also have an automatic gearbox and use regenerative braking to recharge the battery, all of this making them ideal for urban driving.
The Aygos will complement those already added to the fleet last year. These have been used successfully by Neighbourhood officers and PCSOs across the force.
the force said they are a very cost-effective and visible addition. As part of the move, the new Aygos will now be dedicated to the more rural Neighbourhood Policing bases.
Chief Constable Craig Guildford said: “Adding these hybrid vehicles to our fleet is positive for communities, the environment and our increased numbers of staff. They will increase our visibility, responsiveness and flexibility across all our neighbourhoods.
“They are representative of future greener technology that we will start to see filter into every aspect of the policing world, especially when it comes to the shift from petrol vehicles as electric battery technology increases.
“This work is also about ensuring our officers have the most cost-effective tools for the job, putting the right resources in the right places to best serve the public.“Investing where it’s sensible, going greener and looking at where certain vehicles are better suited to different roles means we can use them to their best advantage. These are vital additions as we continue to grow with a further 100 new officer posts in 2021-22.
“We are dedicated in this progression to greener technology, and as we look towards the government’s 2030 deadline to end the production of cars with internal combustion engines it’s fantastic to see the progress our fleet team is making towards reducing our current emissions.
“By the end of May, we are also looking to introduce our first fully electric pool cars as part of this green initiative too.”
