Pedal power plan to drive Newark forward

Posted onPosted on 6th Jul

Newark has been chosen as a town to further promote cycling as an affordable recreational activity and a ‘green’ method of transport.

It could be hosting a cycle-hire scheme using iconic folding Brompton Bicycles that has already proved popular in cities across the UK.

For an expected £3.50 a day people will be able to borrow a bike to travel across the town.

It is hoped that the low price of the rental bikes will encourage people to switch to pedal power and help reduce some of the congestion on the roads.

Newark and Sherwood District Council leader, Coun David Lloyd, and the chief executive of Brompton Bike Hire, Will Butler-Adams, talked about how to work together to develop a town-wide cycle facility for residents, employees and visitors.

The MP for Newark, Robert Jenrick, also dropped in to look at the Brompton Bicycles, which could soon be available to hire in and around the town.

An investment in better cycling solutions for Newark will support the district council’s plans to address congestion, reduce carbon impacts and encourage walking and cycling to benefit public health.

If successful, the partnership would see ‘docks’ positioned throughout the town, where customers could hire a bike for as long as required.

Traditionally Brompton bike hire schemes are seen in cities, including London and Birmingham, but Newark has been chosen to set an example for how it could work in towns of a similar size to further promote cycling as an affordable recreational activity and a ‘green’ method of transport.
