Earlier today at a meeting of the government’s Local Action Committee, it was decided that Newark and Sherwood will be designated an area of concern.

It will be placed on the government’s Watchlist of areas under close scrutiny due to the steep rose in the number of cases of Covid-19.

The watchlist is based on local authorities that show the rate and trend in weekly incidents, and the proportion of people that are testing positive.

This decision reflects the sharp rise in confirmed cases in the area – 56 for the most recent 14-day period for which Nottinghamshire County Council has complete data.

A relatively high proportion of people being tested have been found to be positive for Covid-19.

The majority of cases are people who live in Newark. Some are linked to the Bakkavor desserts factory, where the whole workforce issuing tested.

However. Nottinghamshire County Council said not all cases are linked to the Bakkavor site.

The director of public health for Nottinghamshire, Jonathan Gribbin (pictured), said: “It is of critical importance that strict measures to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 are in place across the whole community, all of our workplaces, and in any setting where we meet with people outside of our immediate household.

“Residents, businesses and everyone living or working in Newark are strongly urged to follow all of the government guidance in full.

It is still vital that everyone follows social distancing guidance in full including guidelines about car sharing, washing hands regularly, wearing face coverings, self-isolating and quickly getting a test if symptoms develops.”
