Free new look chance for community projects

Volunteer It Yourself (VIY), which challenges young people to regenerate community spaces while learning new vocational skills, is looking for projects across Newark and Sherwood, Bassetlaw and Mansfield to work on up to June.

Community spaces such as sports clubs, music venues, youth clubs, libraries and community cafes that need a refresh or repair are encouraged to apply.

VIY will entirely fund projects through the Community Renewal Fund, but projects must not exceed £25,000.
Ideal works needed include carpentry (portioning space, accessibility ramps, outdoor furniture or spaces), installing or refurbishing bathrooms, simple kitchen refresh or installation, and painting and decorating.

VIY projects support local young people aged 16-24 by equipping them with employability skills and qualifications, including City & Guilds accreditations.

Examples of work completed by Volunteer It Yourself include helping to convert the ground floor of an empty bank in Sutton into a new community music and arts venue called the Sound Lounge.

Community groups who think they have a space that qualifies are encouraged to fill out VIY’s Google form.

Coun David Lloyd, leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “This is such a fantastic opportunity for our community spaces and young people.

“A VIY project will mean that valued community venues have the potential to receive a refresh at no cost to them, allowing them to continue supporting our wider community, whilst also championing our young people by giving them the opportunity to gain vital skills, experiences and qualifications.

“It’s crucial that we continue supporting the younger generations in finding a meaningful career they will enjoy, particularly after what has undoubtedly been a challenging time.

“I highly encourage any community group, which feels it has a space that is both eligible and would benefit from a VIY project, to complete their Google form or contact the Volunteer It Yourself team.”

Volunteer It Yourself combines DIY and volunteering by helping young people learn vocational trade skills while repairing and refurbishing community facilities. Participants are mentored by professional tradespeople and gain Entry Level City and Guilds trade skills accreditations. More information about VIY can be found at https://volunteerityourself.org
