Residents of Newark and Sherwood are invited to a free Flood Resilience Community Information Event on Thursday, 18th September, at Sconce and Devon Park, from 12.30pm to 6.30pm.
he event is designed to help communities better prepare for and respond to flooding, with expert advice and practical support available throughout the day.
Nationally recognised flood resilience expert Mary Long-Dhonau, who has supported and advised countless victims of flooding during their recovery and is a passionate advocate for Property Flood Resilience (PFR), will share practical advice and tips on how to protect belongings in the event of a flood, steps to take after flooding, and the latest information on flood-related insurance.

Coun Paul Taylor, portfolio holder for Public Protection and Community Relations at Newark and Sherwood District Council said: “Flooding can have a devastating impact on our communities, and we know how distressing and disruptive it can be for residents. That’s why Newark and Sherwood District Council is continuing to do all we can to lessen the impact of flooding and support those affected. This event is a vital opportunity for people to learn more about how to protect their homes and families, and to hear directly from experts who are working hard to improve flood resilience across the district.
“We’re proud to be working alongside the Environment Agency and other key partners to bring this event to our residents. Whether you’ve experienced flooding before or simply want to be better prepared, I encourage everyone to come along. There’s no need to book – just pop by and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and support available.”
Mary added: “Having been flooded myself I know exactly what an appalling experience it is. That is why I am so passionate about property flood resilience. I am also going to bring with me my newly published ‘Directory of Property Flood Resilience Products and Measures’ ready for those who don’t have the internet to take home with them.”
