Family fun meets local heritage in Mining and Music event

A day celebrating mining and music is coming to Bilsthorpe this weekend, honouring their importance to communities across Newark and Sherwood.

Taking place at Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum on Sunday, 21st September, Mining and Music is a free family event, from 11am to 4pm, including live music, arts and crafts, and a family trail.

Thoresby Colliery Band will be performing and 1st Bilsthorpe Scouts will show off their drumming skills from 12noon.

Coun Rowan Cozens, deputy leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and portfolio holder for Heritage, Culture, and the Arts, said: “Music has always been important to miners, from brass bands, to jazz, to choirs and majorettes.

“This event is an opportunity to support your community, while getting creative and enjoying music from a national award-winning local band.”

Mining and Museum is a collaboration between Open Doors and 1st Bilsthorpe Scouts.

Open Doors is a programme of arts activity that aims to increase creative opportunities for young people and under-served groups. A National Portfolio Organisation, Open Doors is funded by Arts Council England and is delivered by the district council.
