Nearly 4,000 households will have their council tax bills reduced by £150 under a hardship scheme created by Newark and Sherwood District Council with Government funds.
As part of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic local authorities, including Newark and Sherwood District Council, have been provided with funding to give additional help to all households of working age who qualify for Council Tax Support.
Through the hardship scheme the district council has in total made 3,861 awards with £577,980 credited to Council Tax accounts. This discount has been spread out over the remaining balances to reduce monthly payments from the beginning of this month.
Council leader Coun David Lloyd: “We appreciate that many households will have experienced a financial squeeze during the Covid-19 pandemic and this additional support will go some way to relieving the financial distress.
“If anyone is having difficulty meeting their obligations toward Council Tax we would say: ‘Come and talk to us and we will see what options are available to assist’.”
Council Tax Support helps people on low incomes pay their council tax. Residents may receive Council Tax Support if they pay council tax and their income and capital (savings and investments) are below a certain level, irrespective of whether they rent or own their home.
