Extra care village moves a step closer

Posted onPosted on 4th Feb

WORK is under way to create a multi-million pound extra care village in Boughton.

The development, which will provide housing for people with care needs in Newark and Sherwood, will comprise 40 purpose-built units, including 30 apartments over two levels and 10 self-contained bungalows.

Facilities will include communal areas, a commercial kitchen, a hair salon, car parking and green spaces for residents.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held by construction company nmcn to officially mark the first step in the development, which is due to complete in autumn 2021.

The cutting of the first sod was led by Newark and Sherwood District Council deputy leader, Coun Keith Girling, and vice-chair of homes and communities, Coun Rhona Holloway.

Coun Girling, said: “The extra care village will provide opportunities for our older community to live independently, while still being able to access the care they need 24/7.

“There is a growing demand for supported housing and our aim is to continue to build high-quality homes for Newark and Sherwood’s residents, as we did for Gladstone House in Newark.”

The scheme, which is being built on an infill site that had previously attracted fly tippers and anti-social behaviour, is the result of a successful bid for £2m funding from Homes England, and funding from the council.

The programme of work has been procured through Efficiency East Midlands (EEM).

Nick Banks, operations director for the construction business unit of nmcn, said: “This scheme marks the start of our partnership with the client team and the first on the Efficiency East Midlands Framework.

“It will be great to deliver this fantastic extra care facility for the local community.”
