Crossbreed Mia heading to Crufts for semi-final

Posted onPosted on 26th Apr

Mia, a 13-year-old greyhound/Staffordshire bull terrier cross, and owner Kelly Allen, are off to Crufts in 2025.

Mia was named the ‘Golden Oldie’ in a regional heat for Scruffts, the annual crossbreed competition run by The Kennel Club.

The Newark dog will go on to compete in the semi-final stages hosted at Crufts.

The Scruffts heat, the second of six to be held this year, took place at Newark Showground as part of the All About Dogs show.

The competition attracted crossbreeds and their owners from all over the region, but just four have made it through to the next stage — the semi-final stages at Crufts 2025.

The overall winners of the semi-final will then have the chance to compete in the final, also at Crufts 2025.

Kelly said: “I am beyond proud of Mia, this is a dream come true. I have visited Crufts several times and always dreamed about having my girl with me, but never thinking it would be possible.”

The Scruffts Family Crossbreed Dog of the Year competition, supported by pet food makers James Wellbeloved, is open to all crossbreeds and mixed breed dogs, of all shapes, sizes, and over six months old.

Judge Gloria Bonnell chose a winner for each of the four classes — Most Handsome Crossbreed Dog, Prettiest Crossbreed Bitch, Golden Oldie Crossbreed, and the Good Citizen Dog Training scheme class.

Dogs were judged against the following qualities — good character, good health, good personality, and good temperament with people and other dogs.

The four class winners from each heat receive goodies from James Wellbeloved, and the four category finalists at next year’s Scruffts Grand Final will each win a year’s supply of James Wellbeloved food.

Lucy Williams, PRO business marketing manager for James Wellbeloved, said: “It was a fantastic day in Newark and we were impressed by all the entrants.”
