On Saturday, 20th January, travel back in time to discover early history in and around Collingham, from Pre-History, Saxons and Romans. Join in the fun between 10 am and 4 pm at Collingham Youth and Community Centre.

There will be a variety of engaging activities on offer throughout the day for families to enjoy, including a Time Travel Tots play and learn family session for children under 5, make your own mammoth creative session, designing and creating a friendship bracelet with Notts and District Guild of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers, and have a go at making and decorating a Roman pot. There will also be activity sheets, the chance to guess mystery historical objects, and haveg homemade cakes and drinks.

Coun Rowan Cozens, deputylLeader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and portfolio holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts, said: “This event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate local history and learn more about your local area. The variety of activities on offer are great for all age ranges to learn about Collingham’s history in a variety of ways.”

Jeremy Lodge, a member of the Collingham and District Local History Society, said: “We started planning this community event in early December as a ‘Winter Warmer’, a lift during cold grey days following Christmas. But after the recent important find at the local Roman Villa site and the recent floods, this event has an added community relevance. Thanks to the hard work of our historians, cake makers and our fantastic partners it will be a warming and memorable event!”

Open Doors is a three-year programme of events organised by the district council and funded by Arts Council England. Its aim is to increase creative opportunities for local young people and underserved groups and become a focal point for culture across Newark and Sherwood.
