Celebrating volunteers who make community stronger

Posted onPosted on 9th Jun

Appreciation events for volunteers were hosted by Newark and Sherwood District Council, in partnership with Your CVS.

They included an afternoon tea, with live performances by vintage music vocalist Jayne Darling, in Clipstone and a Volunteer Thank You Day at Thoresby Park, featuring a birds of prey experience and a community picnic.

The council’s community development team and staff at Your CVS delivered personalised thank-you cards to volunteer groups across the district. They also hosted a Volunteer Fair at the RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, Edwinstowe.

Coun Paul Peacock, council leader, said: “This was a wonderful celebration of the people who make our communities stronger, kinder, and more connected.

“We’re grateful to every volunteer who gives their time to help others. They are the backbone of our community, and their selfless contributions have a profound impact on many lives.”

Volunteering opportunities were also highlighted at some of the district’s most iconic cultural venues.

Coun Rowan Cozens, deputy leader and portfolio holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at the council, said: “The Palace Theatre, National Civil War Centre, and Newark Castle all benefit enormously from the dedication of our volunteers.

“Their support is the backbone of our daily operations. Whether they’re welcoming guests, guiding tours, or assisting behind the scenes, their enthusiasm and generosity shine through in everything they do.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the time and energy they give so willingly. Their contribution truly makes a difference.”

Carol Wilkinson, a volunteer at the National Civil War Centre, said: “I love meeting the general public and helping them to enjoy the museum. The main joy for me is that I also have the opportunity of promoting our wonderful town.

“Volunteering is part of my DNA; I have done it all of my life.”
