Building future careers in Apprenticeships Week

Posted onPosted on 11th Feb

A school is celebrating after receiving 4,000 bricks from a national housebuilder.
Newark Academy took delivery of the donation from representatives of Persimmon Homes, who visited the school to give a talk on apprenticeships.

The event was delivered by Persimmon’s apprenticeship team as part of National Apprenticeship Week, which brings schools and employers together to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses, and the wider economy.

They were joined by deputy town mayor of Newark Lynn Roulstone and Co Coun Sam Smith.

Headteacher Inma Pena said: “We are grateful to Persimmon for their generous donation of 4,000 bricks to support our growing construction provision.

“Construction is now one of the most popular GCSE options at Newark Academy, with 100% of our students progressing on to higher level courses or apprenticeships.

“Partnerships like this help us prepare our young people for successful futures in the construction sector.”

Lynn added: “Apprenticeships help young people find careers in a variety of fields where there is a need for skilled workers.

“I’m delighted that Persimmon Homes is engaging with Newark’s young people in setting them on the path to worthwhile and interesting careers.”

Sam added: “It’s fantastic to see Newark Academy offering construction as a course, giving young people real, hands-on skills that can lead directly to good local jobs. With around 100 students already taking part, this shows just how much demand there is for practical learning.”

Gareth Hankin, managing Director Persimmon Nottingham, said: “It was fantastic to meet students who have an interest in taking on a career in construction.

“We hope that by engaging with schools like Newark Academy, we can help young people better understand the many routes and opportunities available to them.”
