Applications open for new community grant scheme

Community projects with the aim of making social housing areas Cleaner, Safer and Greener may be eligible for up to £1,000 of council funding.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has opened up applications for grants as part of its first ever Community Chest scheme.

The grants can be used to support a range of projects that will specifically improve amenities in or around social housing areas, including projects with the aim of:

  • Resolving community identified issues
  • Reducing anti-social behaviour around social housing
  • Supporting safety and security measures
  • Increasing wellbeing and mental health of tenants
  • Tackling issues relating to waste management, litter and dog fouling
  • Helping vulnerable groups or individuals
  • Supporting tenants into education, learning and volunteering opportunities.

Coun Tim Wendels, chairman of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Homes and Communities Committee, said: “I am very proud to be launching our first ever Community Chest scheme. It is a great way for the Council to help those who do such amazing and varied work in neighbourhoods across our district.

“Community Chest grants will support people working right at the beating heart of their community. It is important to us to provide vital financial aid to sustainable initiatives and support the continued efforts of local spirit.”

Applications can be made any time. A panel will meet to discuss the applications around three times a year.
