A year of entertainment ahead for town centre

Posted onPosted on 20th Mar

A live screening of the coronation of King Charles III is among a programme of events for 2023 taking place in Newark town centre.

The events form part of the Cultural Heart of Newark scheme, which is in its second year to increase the town centre’s vibrancy and encourage more footfall.

It is one of the projects of Newark Town Board with Newark Town Council leading the scheme, along with support from Newark and Sherwood District Council.

The programme will start with a live screening of the coronation, in the Market Place, on Saturday, 6th May.

Other events in the town centre include a range of specialist market days, such as vegan markets. The markets programme will run alongside the general retail market days on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The late May bank holiday weekend will host a Continental Food and Drink Festival, from Saturday 27th to Sunday, 28th May in the Market Place, and a schedule of Steampunk festivities is planned.

Newark Book Festival will return from Thursday 6th to Sunday, 9th July and the annual Traditions Festival will again be held in multiple town centre venues, from Friday 21st to Sunday, 23rd July.

Live music is set to take place throughout the year in the Market Place as well as the popular special brass band concerts on Sunday afternoons through July and August in the grounds of Newark Castle.

In August, Newark-On-Sea will also return to the town centre, from Friday 4th to Sunday, 13th August with a giant urban beach and seaside entertainment.

Newark Festival will run from Friday 25th to Monday, 28th August, bringing colourful performances and live music to local venues with its special finale featuring a Brass Band Explosion concert against the backdrop of Newark Castle grounds.

Newark town centre will again celebrate a busy festive schedule, starting with the Christmas Lights Switch-On event on Sunday, 26th November, followed by a weekend of traditional Christmas markets on 9th and 10th December.

All events planned for Newark and Sherwood are listed on one central events calendar at www.visitevents.co.uk.

Also returning for a second year is the Newark Town Centre Races, which will return on Friday, 28th July. Newark and Sherwood District Council is working alongside Generation Pro Cycling Events to deliver fast-paced cycle racing, featuring some of the country’s best road cyclists.
