Musician brings sunshine afternoon to memory cafe

Share:

A musician who regularly performs at local pubs switched to a community café, bringing an afternoon of live music and enjoyment to people attending Newark Memory Café.

Martin Lynch, who has personal experience of dementia through his grandparents, volunteered his time to entertain visitors, performing familiar favourites from Dolly Parton, ABBA, Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard.

Accompanied by his acoustic guitar, Martin had people singing along and tapping their toes before finishing with the appropriately titled Bring Me Sunshine.

The visit was made possible with support from Martin’s employer, Siemens, which enabled him to give his time to the community group.

He was invited to perform by his friend, Andy Smith, owner of Guardian Angel Carers Lincoln & Newark, who regularly volunteers at the Memory Café.

Andy said: “I first met Martin through local business networking, and we’ve become good friends. He’s a talented musician who regularly plays gigs around Lincoln, so when we spoke about the Memory Café he was really keen to get involved.

“Having experienced dementia through his grandparents, it’s something that means a lot to him personally.”

Newark Memory Café meets every Tuesday afternoon at Bridge Community Centre on Lincoln Road, providing a welcoming environment for people living with dementia or memory loss, their families and carers.

The group offers opportunities for social interaction, companionship, and activities, including music, quizzes and games.

Familiar music can be particularly meaningful for people living with dementia, providing opportunities for enjoyment, participation, and connection.

Andy said the visit highlighted the important contribution businesses can make by supporting their employees to volunteer.

It’s brilliant that Siemens supported Martin in giving his time to the café. When we talk about businesses supporting their communities we often think about fundraising or sponsorship, but sometimes the most valuable thing a business can give is the opportunity for its people to share their time and talents.

“Martin brought his guitar, his enthusiasm, and some fantastic music —everyone had a really enjoyable afternoon.

“I’d love to see more employers across Newark and Lincoln encouraging their people to get involved with local community groups. These small gestures can make a real difference.”

Andy is passionate about supporting local initiatives and helping people maintain their independence, wellbeing, and social connections.

“Newark Memory Café is a brilliant community group, and I’m proud to volunteer there,” he added.

“A huge thank you to Martin, Siemens, and everyone who helps make the café such a welcoming place. You don’t always need to do something big to make a difference. Sometimes a familiar song and a little of your time are enough.”
