Ireland 100-mile cycle in aid of cancer charity

Posted onPosted on 23rd Jun

Caring Newark man Kieron Foley is tackling a cycling challenge to raise money for charity.

Kieron, who raised money for Prostate Cancer UK last August by cycling 100 miles, has signed up for the day-long Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle on 4th July.

This time he is supporting the charity Breakthrough Cancer Research.

The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in Ireland covers 100 miles in one day. Now in its 44th year, the challenge takes place along one of the world’s most-renowned touring circular routes, starting and ending in Killarney.

Since the inaugural cycle in 1982, the event has raised more than €21.9m for more than 200 charities and voluntary community organisations.

Kieron, who had not ridden a bike for many years before his charity efforts last year in tribute to his dad surviving prostate cancer, said: “My late brother, Steve, enjoyed cycling with St Christopher’s cycling club in Kingsbury.

“And as my dad was a very proud Irish man from Killorglin, Co Kerry, I have decided to attempt to pay tribute to them both by signing up for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Maybe it was in a moment of madness, but I have been saying for a while I want to attempt it and now I am doing it before I turn 60.

“I will be cycling for Breakthrough Cancer Research as I and many people have lost a lot of loved ones to this horrible disease. If it prevents one family going through this, then it will be worth it.

“All funds raised will go directly to this great cause. I will cover my own transport, accommodation, and plenty of coffee!”
