National Civil War Centre invites A-Level teachers Into virtual museum

Posted onPosted on 21st Apr

The National Civil War Centre, Newark, has launched a new resource for A-Level history teachers across the country.

Made possible by a grant from Art Fund, ‘Revolution, Republic and Restoration – An A-Level Virtual History Environment’ offers a full tour of the museum from a student’s laptop, phone or tablet, complete with exclusive content linked to the AQA, OCR and Edexcel syllabus.

As students explore the museum’s collection of 17th Century artefacts, they will be able to click on tags that reveal extra interactive content bringing exhibits to life. Blue tags unveil detailed object labels as well as photos, databases, videos and interactives while yellow tags signal fascinating mini-lectures with twelve of the National Civil War Centre’s academic partners.

Sarah Clarke, head of learning and participation at the centre, said: “We hope that the range of fantastic guest speakers throughout the virtual environment, from history professors to authors, lecturers and PHD students, will inspire A Level History students to see where their career in history can lead. Our team have had to think out of the box over the past year and I’m delighted that this wonderful, ground-breaking resource has come from it.”

The virtual environment is being offered to A-Level history teachers for free until the summer holidays as the team hopes to receive feedback from this pilot version to ensure it best meets the needs of educators.

Coun David Lloyd, leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “The breadth of content on offer is truly remarkable and I’m proud of our Learning team at the National Civil War Centre for putting it all together. I’m sure that this resource will be of great help to teachers across the country at a time when they’ve been facing unusual challenges”.

The team are now working on further virtual environments and a British Civil Wars website for Key Stage 3 which they hope to launch soon.

A Level History teachers who would like to receive free access to the ‘Revolution, Republic and Restoration – An A Level Virtual History Environment’, should sign up to the National Civil War Centre’s Learning Newsletter at www.nationalcivilwarcentre.com/learn/a-level.
