Gardens in Southwell, Halam and Sutton-on-Trent are to open on Sunday as part of the National Garden Scheme – but tickets must be bought in advance.

Timed entry tickets will be needed to visit Park Farm on Crink Lane, Southwell, The Old Vicarage at Halam, and 5a High Street, Sutton-on-Trent, on Sunday afternoon. Tickets to visit any of the gardens must be booked at www.ngs.org.uk

Park Farm, which is open from 2pm to 5.30pm, is a three-acre garden with an extensive variety of trees, shrubs and perennials, many rare or unusual. It has long, colourful herbaceous borders, roses, woodland garden, alpine/scree garden and a large wildlife pond.

The plantsman’s gardens at 5a High Street are open from 1pm to 5pm. Manicured lawns set off the plants, and there are tropical areas and herbaceous beds. Ponds run through the plot, leading to woodland walks and a fernery with more than 180 varieties.

The garden at The Old Vicarage, Halam Hill, which is open from noon to 3pm, has been transformed from two acres of hillside pony paddocks into landscaped gardens featuring unusual plants and trees.

The National Garden Scheme gives visitors access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales, raising money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake.
