Travel through time at Palace Theatre

Posted onPosted on 18th Jan

Newark Palace Theatre’s auditorium is set to become a time machine as it welcomes an evening of fascinating, hilarious and eye-opening stories from 400 years ago.

The 17th Century Show is presented by Adam Nightingale, who visitors to the National Civil War Centre will recognise as one of its costumed performers.

On Friday, 27th January, he’ll be joined by his brother, Mark Nightingale (Marco the Mute Musician) for a night celebrating the winter tradition of storytelling.

Throughout the course of the show, he’ll be bringing a range of 17th Century characters to life, from King Charles II to Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins, master swordmaker Andrea Ferrara and more.

He said: “The 17th Century Show is a fun irreverent way of looking at a much-neglected period of history, often written off as far too complicated, intense, or dare I say it, too dull to be bothered with. It was really anything but! The 17th Century was packed full of drama, colour, incredible ideas, visionary lunacy and the craziest of crazy individuals.

“The 17th Century Show reflects all of this, looking at the century though the lens of four larger than life characters and some great interactive musical entertainment.”

There will also be a chance for the audience to really get involved with the fun as they assess the romantic prospects of various 17th Century figures with a history based version of the famous dating game Snog Marry Avoid, appropriately retitled Bed Wed Behead.

Tickets for The 17th Century Show are £12, £10 for concessions or £9 for Palace members and are on sale now at www.palacenewark.com.
