The Suthers School celebrates first-ever GCSE results

Posted onPosted on 25th Aug

The Suthers School celebrated this morning as its original cohort of founding students collected their GCSE results, five years after the school first opened its doors.

Established by Nova Education Trust, The Suthers School serves the communities of Fernwood, Balderton, Newark and the surrounding areas.

The school is housed in a purpose-built facility at Fernwood Business Park, and opened in September 2017 to Year 7 students.

The founding students began their secondary school life working out of temporary accommodation on the Toot Hill School site, where they were based for the first three years whilst their new building was under construction.

They were due to move into their newly-completed building in the spring of 2020, however this was postponed due to the first COVID-19 lockdown.

The students then found themselves beginning their Key Stage 4 education in the middle of a global pandemic and having to undertake their studies throughout national lockdowns, remote learning and home isolations.

This morning, they received the results of their efforts when they collected their GCSE results.

Almost 75% of all pupils secured a grade 4, and over 50% of this year’s cohort secured a grade 5 in both English and maths — a significant achievement for their first ever set of GCSE results.

Nic Watkin, head teacher, said: “We are absolutely delighted to celebrate the success of our first Year 11 cohort.”

“Our students have secured a really strong set of results and I am incredibly proud of them all. They have shown amazing character and should be extremely proud of themselves and the first set of results The Suthers School has achieved.”

Dom Lynas, assistant head teacher, added: “We would like to recognise the hard work of our staff and to thank all parents and carers for their unwavering support. We wish all of our students the best for their future endeavours.”

Andy Seymour, executive head teacher, said: “It is so pleasing to see these exceptional young people secure the outcomes that they have this year. As the founding members of The Suthers School, it’s been wonderful to see their hard work and dedication pay off with over 50% of this year’s cohort securing a grade 5 in both English and Maths.”

“Whilst we place great importance on academic success, we are also so very proud of the way in which our students have developed their character alongside the academic excellence which has certainly made a significant contribution to the excellent achievements that we see today. Congratulations and very best wishes for the future.”

Special mention went to:
