Students explore future careers at eighth Expo

Newark and Sherwood District Council, in partnership with the Lincoln College Group, celebrated the successful return of the Future First Careers Expo at Newark Showground.

Now in its eighth year, the Expo once again proved to be an inspiring event for students, drawing participation from 10 schools across Newark and Sherwood and Lincolnshire.

With more than 1,300 students from years 11 to 13 attending throughout the day, the event offered an opportunity for young people to explore future career and education options.

Over 50 exhibitors filled The Lady Eastwood Centre, representing a mix of local and national businesses, training providers, and education institutions. From apprenticeships and vocational training to university pathways and emerging industries, students had the chance to ask questions, gather advice, and discover opportunities they may not have previously considered.

Coun Claire Penny, portfolio holder for Sustainable Economic Development at the council, said: “The Future First Careers Expo continues to be one of the most impactful events in our calendar. It brings together education and industry in a way that empowers young people in our area to make more informed decisions about the next steps in their careers and futures. The enthusiasm and curiosity we saw from students this year was inspiring.”

A wide variety of businesses and education providers attended the Expo. This year included stalls from national brands such as Barclays, Currys and Boots. There were also representatives from the British Armed Forces and Police Service. Training and education providers include Newark College, Nottingham Trent University, and West Notts College.

John Trevatt, careers leader at Magnus C of E Academy, Newark, added: “The energy and curiosity from our students was fantastic.

“They engaged with employers, explored diverse career pathways from STEM to Creative Arts, and gained invaluable insights into the skills demanded by the modern workforce. Investing in these real-world experiences is crucial for bridging the gap between education and employment.

“It was a privilege to witness their eyes open to the vast opportunities ahead. A huge thank you to all the exhibitors who took the time to speak with our students.”

The Future First Careers Expo was set-up in 2017 to help address social mobility challenges and ensure that every young person has access to clear, achievable career pathways.

By connecting students with real-world opportunities, the Expo continues to play a key role in shaping Newark and Sherwood’s future workforce.
