A scheme is under way to encourage more ladies to rediscover netball.
Back to Netball is one of English Netballs flagship programmes, designed to reintroduce ladies to netball in a fun, flexible, and social environment.
Louise Key, English Netball development officer covering the Newark area, said: “Many won’t have played since school or not at all.”
England Netball ran a free Back to Netball taster session in Newark as a celebration of the Commonwealth Games. Twenty four ladies went along, many of whom felt inspired to find a session having been to or watched the England Roses take part in the event, and the raised profile of women in sport.
Back to Netball sessions will be running in Newark from Thursday, 1st September, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm at The Newark Academy, London Road, Balderton. They will cost £4.50 per week.
The aim of the sessions are to provide women with a gentle reintroduction to the sport. Run by passionate and enthusiastic coaches, sessions cover the basics of the game, including passing, footwork, and shooting.
Sessions finish with a friendly game to put skills into practise.
One woman who has taken part in Back to Netball, Katy, said: “Before joining Back to Netball I hardy did any exercise, I actually used to get a bit out of breath going up the stairs at work.
“I was really nervous before my first session, but my coach was really nice and introduced me to the other ladies. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and have kept going ever since.
“The sessions are such a laugh and go really quickly. I am now playing twice a week, can run around the court and, best of all, have lost three quarters of a stone.
“I just feel so much happier now and more confident. I have made loads of lovely friends and would highly recommend anyone who is thinking about going to give it a go.”
