Rainbows charity appeal hits £125,000

Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People is thanking everyone in Nottinghamshire who supported its fundraising appeal – which has raised £125,000.

In June the hospice, which cares for children and young people with life-limited illnesses from across the East Midlands, announced it was facing losses of up to £1 million because of the Covid-19 crisis.

Although the hospice isn’t at imminent risk of closure, the future is unknown. But the generosity of the community has provided a valuable lifeline for the charity.

Jane Burns, director of supporter relations at Rainbows, said the support had been overwhelming.

“Like all charities, Covid-19 has put us in a very difficult position and a situation we aren’t used to,” said Jane. “But our supporters have been amazing, like always, and they have really come through for us. I would like to thank everyone who has donated to our appeal, individuals, groups and companies.

“Every single donation, and every single message of support we have received, really does make a difference to our families, our staff and our volunteers. Because of these contributions to our charity, we can continue to provide services to our Rainbows families and the families we are supporting through the NHS.”

During the Covid-19 crisis, Rainbows adapted the hospice and trained staff to be able to care for children from Leicester’s Children’s Hospital to help relieve strains on the NHS and nursing them until it’s safe for them to go home.

The charity also extended its bereavement support and counselling to every local family who has lost a loved one, as well providing an At Home Support Service, enabling Hospice Care Assistants to visit Rainbows families in their own homes. Rainbows is also continuing to provide emergency stays for families and end of life care.

The charity recently reopened all of its shops, having previously been closed due to Covid-19, and they are all accepting donations.
