Those from Nottinghamshire who served within the Armed Forces during the First World War have been added to the Imperial War Museum’s national ‘War Memorials Register’.
The addition of the Victoria Embankment Memorial in Trent Bridge also boosts the region’s international reputation as its details can now be accessed and viewed globally.
The memorial was officially unveiled by The Duke of Kent in June 2019 and was constructed on the Victoria Embankment next to an original memorial built between 1923 and 1927.
Nottinghamshire County Council Armed Forces Champion Coun Keith Girling said: “Having Nottinghamshire’s huge contribution towards ensuring the security of our nation recognised by its addition to this national register instils within us an immense sense of pride.
“We will never forget those who were injured or paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, and the continued commemoration of our gratitude is crucial.
“I am particularly grateful that local families will be able to see their relatives within the context of our national story”.
The Imperial War Museum has said: “[memorials] form an important part of our cultural heritage and reflect the changing face of commemoration as well as artistic, social, military and international history.
“Each community chose their own design and wording, meaning that every war memorial presents a unique historical record.”
