A secondary school in Newark is celebrating the outstanding success of its first large-scale musical.
Pupils from The Suthers School in Fernwood — part of the Nova Education Trust — performed Matilda The Musical, based on the book written by Roald Dahl in 1988.
A total of 33 pupils in years 7 to 11 took part in two performances last week in-front of sell-out crowds at the school
Matilda was produced in conjunction with Musical Theatre International who licensed the script and the music.
Head teacher Nicola Watkin said: “The exceptional dedication and commitment from all students and staff involved in the show certainly demonstrated their hard work to make this show hugely successful.
“I would like to thank all parents, carers, students and staff who came to support over the two evenings. I still have a huge smile on my face and I am sure many of the audience will have too.
“I am really looking forward to holding more events throughout the year to showcase the creative arts.”
The musical has been performed all over the world including in the West End in London and Broadway in New York, so the pupils were following in some very famous footsteps. There are currently plans for a Netflix film adaptation.
Year 9 pupil, Bianca, said: “I’m really glad that I got to have this experience and meet so many amazing people. We have been limited during covid with any performances or even mixing with other year groups.
“I have really appreciated working with other in other year groups. I want to say thank you to all the staff that have used their time and patience to create this show.”
Mariana, a year 8 pupil, said: “I can’t for the next performance.”
