Breakfast event for veterans

Veterans in the district are being invited to a free breakfast as part of an event organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council.  The event will allow veterans and ex-service men and women to meet face to face in a relaxed, social and secure environment to have an informal chat and to find out about support services available to them.

The event will start at 10am and will run until midday at Newark Town Hall on Tuesday, 30 November.  All veterans are invited to book a place to attend.

At the breakfast, veterans can enjoy hot food and refreshments with Deputy Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Keith Girling.

The ‘Forest Forces’ programme developed by Nottingham Forest Community Trust, which tackles social isolation in veterans by providing a variety of regular activities and events, is supporting the event.

Other partners supporting the event will include Nottinghamshire County Council, Age UK, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, Dementia Carers, RFEA – The Forces Employment Charity, Insight, Change Grow Live, SSAFA – the Armed Forces charity and Citizens Advice Sherwood and Newark.

Coun Keith Girling said: “The Armed Forces play a vital role in the district and we are forever grateful for the service they provide in protecting our country.

“I encourage any veteran in the district to come down and meet with us. This is a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and find out about the support in our area.

“We remain committed to doing all we can to support those in the Armed Forces both in our district and in our own workforce enabling them to have the care and backing when they need it most.”

The council has made several commitments to the Armed Forces which has seen them achieve Silver status in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. The scheme acknowledges employers who support defence personnel, including reservists, veterans, wounded injured and sick, families and cadets.

The council said it is determined to achieve the Gold status in the near future and has already made great progress towards obtaining this. On Monday 15 November, Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Chief Executive Officer, John Robinson, re-signed the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of the District Council, restating its promise to encourage awareness, understanding and integration between the Armed Forces community and the wider local community.

To book a place at the breakfast, email communityengagement@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk or call 01636 650 000. Please also state your dietary requirements if needed.

The event is casual dress so veterans don’t need to wear berets or military dress and attendees are asked to bring proof of identification.

If you are unable to attend this event and/or would like to be kept informed about support services available to veterans as well as future events, please register your interest by emailing communityengagement@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk or calling 01636 650 000.
