The Emergency Department at King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton is set to expanded its services thanks to a £5m investment.

The project, which is awaiting planning permission for some areas, will add 14 further treatment spaces to the Majors department, increasing the total from 26 to 40.

There will also be more toilets, a space for patients with mental health needs, and a new seating area with room for 40 people, alongside four assessment rooms.

Another key feature will be the development of the ambulance handover area, which will help to identify patients’ needs as soon as they arrive and immediately direct them to the most appropriate place for their care.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said this would ensure quicker ambulance turnaround times, getting crews back on the road sooner to respond to emergencies.

The trust said the changes would provide a calmer environment for those who need to spend a long time in the department.

Richard Kemp, divisional director of Nursing, Urgent and Emergency Care, said: “Demand for urgent and emergency care continues to grow, and this development will give us the additional capacity and improved facilities we need to respond to that demand.

“The £5m development forms part of a wider programme of investment in services and facilities, supporting the trust’s ambition to ensure patients and local communities continue to receive high-quality care now and in the future.”

Funding for the project, whose first phase should be operational by the end of the year, has been provided by NHS England.
