Students’ achievements at Magnus Church of England Academy in Newark were celebrated at its annual awards ceremony.
Awards were presented across every year group in recognition of the academy’s values of Determination, Integrity, Ambition, Humility and Compassion.
Students also received subject awards and recognition for 100% attendance, while special awards celebrated achievement in sport, character, excellence, community contribution, and alumni success.
Addressing students, parents and carers, principal Anna Martin said: “Awards events are important to us because they give us the opportunity to pause and reflect and recognise how incredible our young people are. To reflect on just how far our students have developed and progressed this year.”
Guests were entertained throughout the event by the Magnus Swing Band and solo musical performances from students, including Year 12 student Precious Jiboku, picture below.

Speaking to the audience during the awards were Year 12 student, Raluca Scurtulescu (head girl) and Khaleel Abdulbaqi (head boy).
Raluca said following the ceremony: “I had no idea that I would be receiving awards. I was expecting to give a speech! Shortly before we started, I was told I would also be receiving some awards. I think it’s wonderful!
“Magnus gives so much recognition to students. My parents are here today, and I think — well I hope — they are proud!”
Raluca says she has attended Magnus since year 7, adding: “I have received so much support at Magnus. I have chosen to stay on in the sixth form because I love the community that is here.
“I am proud of everyone here today, because throughout the year the students have worked so hard, and today has been great recognition of all they have done.”
Anna Martin added: “I want to thank our parents, carers, families, and wider community.
“Education is a partnership, and the encouragement, patience, support, and wisdom they provide plays an enormous role in the success we celebrated today.
“I would also like to acknowledge the incredible commitment of our staff. Every day, they go above and beyond to support, inspire and challenge our students to be the very best versions of themselves.
“Congratulations to all our award winners and to every student who has contributed to the life of Magnus this year.”
