The Newark and Sherwood Community Lottery has drawn its first £25,000 jackpot winner.
A local resident from Newark, matched all six numbers in a draw to win the top prize — the first time a resident in the district has won the jackpot since the community lottery was launched in 2021.
The weekly lottery raises money for good causes in the district. It was launched in 2021 by Newark and Sherwood District Council to help support community projects.
Players have a 50 in 1 chance of winning, which is better odds than the National Lottery or the Health Lottery. Prizes range from extra lottery tickets to retail vouchers to the £25,000 jackpot. There is a draw every Saturday night, when a six-digit winning combination is picked.
Each ticket has six numbers between 0 and 9. Prizes are given to players with tickets that match the first or last two to six numbers from the winning combination. Match all six and players win the jackpot.
Coun Paul Taylor, portfolio holder for Public Protection and Community Relations at the council, said: “The Community Lottery is a fantastic initiative that not only supports hard working community groups, but gives people an opportunity to win fantastic prizes.
“It’s raised lots already for groups who are in need of funding and it’s great to know our district is now home to a £25,000 jackpot winner.
“A huge congratulations to the winner, but also a massive thank you to everyone who has taken part and contributed to supporting community groups across our district.”
The lottery said it enables people to support the causes they care about most and this year is on track to raise more than £29,000 for them.
Good causes requiring support across the area include local charities, sports clubs and initiatives, schools and nurseries, arts and music projects, health and emergency services, and local culture and history.
A ticket for Newark and Sherwood Community Lottery costs £1 a week with 60p going directly to good causes.
