Evening talks and town tours are being offered at the National Civil War Centre in Newark.

September starts with a deep dive into the turbulent history of Southwell in The British Civil Wars and Southwell. Far from being a quiet Royalist retreat, Southwell was a town caught in regional, national and international events. This talk explores the political and military upheaval that gripped the town, and asks a tantalising question: did Oliver Cromwell really walk its streets in 1648? Join us as we peel back the layers of myth and memory in the evocative setting of the Tudor Hall.

Next, as part of Heritage Open Days, there is The Hidden Histories of Newark Castle: Kings, Queens and Knights. Expect revelations, surprises, and a fresh perspective on one of Newark’s most iconic landmarks, delivered by historian Dr Gabrielle Storey.

Then, prepare for something completely different. An Evening with the Fighting Nightingales is a humorous and heartfelt look at some of Newark’s grizzlier moments. With live folk music from Jennifer Bell adding warmth and wit, this evening promises laughter, reflection, and a few unexpected twists. It’s history with a wink, and a song.

Every Saturday at 1pm, expert guides lead Town Tours that bring Newark’s streets to life. Whether you choose Besieged But Never Beaten, which explores the town’s defiant role in the English Civil Wars, or Newark Through Time, a journey through centuries of transformation, you’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation for the town’s rich and resilient spirit.
