Pupils at Highfields School, Newark, took part in the Captain Tom Moore 100 Challenge in memory of the man who inspired the country during the first Covid-19 lockdown.
Captain Tom set out to walk around his garden to thank NHS heroes. One hundred laps later he had raised an incredible £38.9m for the NHS Covid-19 appeal.
His simple message of hope – “Tomorrow will be a good day” – inspired millions around the world and brought comfort and joy to many people during the pandemic.
To build on Captain Tom’s legacy, Highfields pupils in years 1 to 6 completed 100 laps of the school’s sports field on what would have been Captain Tom’s 101st birthday.
Pupils and their families were able to sponsor the event by making a donation to the Captain Tom Moore charity, #CaptainTom 100.
Highfields School headteacher Sarah Lyons said: “I am immensely proud of the way in which our pupils have thrown themselves into meeting this challenge, which they completed in their Houses as a team effort.
“This shows fortitude and determination as well as embedding team building skills. It also demonstrates the children’s capacity to think of others.
“The example of the late Captain Tom demonstrates how we can all push ourselves to support a worthy cause, no matter how challenging the circumstances.
“The children were really inspired by Captain Tom last year and were very eager to take part.”
