VIP guests at Scouting thank-you garden party for volunteers

Posted onPosted on 11th Jun

Nottinghamshire Scouts held a Thank You Garden Party celebration for its volunteers in the gardens of The Archbishop’s Palace within Southwell Minster.

The event honoured volunteers awarded some of the highest adult awards in Scouting — the Chief Scout Commendation and Award for Merit.

Hosted by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Veronica Pickering, the celebration welcomed 125 guests, including Deputy Lord-Lieutenant Alex Peace-Gadsby, High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire Ed Attenborough, and the Dean of Southwell, the Rev Dr Neil Evans.

In his opening speech, county lead volunteer Jordan Phillips said: “It’s great to see so many adult volunteers across Nottinghamshire being recognised. This day is to recognise you and thank you for everything that you have done to help young people.”

The smooth running of the day was supported by Explorer Scouts from across Nottinghamshire.
Newark, Bilsthorpe, and Farnsfield Explorers provided a guard of honour for the VIP volunteers and helped serve afternoon tea.

In her closing speech, Veronica said: “Scouting is helping young people with skills for life at such a crucial point in their development, and the earlier we can support people in sections like Squirrels, the better society we have. Thank you to the awardees and supporters for everything you do to help young people in Nottinghamshire.”.

There are young people waiting to join Scouting, but a shortage of volunteers means this can be delayed.
