Shining a light on award win

Nottinghamshire County Council-owned Via East Midlands won the 2020 Association of Public Sector Excellence Street Lighting Innovation Award for its work on an LED street lighting renewals project in Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire’s Lighting the Way to Save Energy project has been managed and implemented by Via, in partnership with the council’s Energy Team and Salix Finance.

More than 70,000 LED lanterns have been installed in the county, saving 71.3 thousand tonnes of carbon and reducing electricity consumption by 81.5 million kWh since its conception in 2014.

Not only has the project delivered significant environmental benefits through carbon savings, it has also seen a 47% reduction in street lighting faults.

The project is set to be extended to convert more of the county’s 94,000 street lights through to 2023.

Coun John Cottee, chairman of the Communities and Place Committee, added: “The award for Via is very well deserved as this project brings so many benefits to the residents of Nottinghamshire and showcases what’s possible through partnership working.

“Anything that reduces faults results in an improved service for residents and doing this whilst saving a significant amount of carbon, electricity and over £10m in energy costs is fantastic news all-round.”
