Reverse Advent calendar to help community foodbank

Posted onPosted on 23rd Nov

Throughout November members of the Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest took part in a reverse Advent Calendar idea.

Members had a box at home and added a food donation each day to be donated to the Food Bank run by Community Action Response (CAR) at the Lifespring Church, New Ollerton. It is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 2pm.

Malcolm Bevan, president of the Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest, said: “We would be delighted if you chose to join us and some people have already done so and are filling their own boxes for the Food Bank.

“The Food Bank provides food donations to families in Ollerton, Edwinstowe and the surrounding areas over the Christmas period.”

Rotarians all over the world celebrated World Polio Day on 24th October with the news that in August the World Health Organisation declared the whole of Africa polio free.

Over the last 35 years Rotarians worldwide have raised £1.5billion and given thousands of volunteer hours to the eradication of polio.

The disease now occurs only in Pakistan and Afghanistan and the fight goes on.

Malcolm said: “If we do not continue to eradicate this crippling and life-threatening disease it will start returning all over the globe.

“If polio is not defeated everywhere it is not defeated anywhere and many lives in this country and elsewhere will be debilitated for life.”

Sherwood Forest Rotary Cycling Club’s ongoing fundraising event for Prostate Cancer UK is continuing.

Sponsorship and donations are rolling in and people are invited to sponsor cyclists or get on their bikes and take part.
