A member of the team at an opticians in Newark is gearing up for a marathon challenge.
Neil Popat, who is a director at the locally-owned and run Specsavers store on Middle Gate, is running the London Marathon for Asthma + Lung UK in memory of his life-long friend, Anish Nagar, who died following an asthma attack last year.
Retail director Neil hasn’t run a marathon before, but to prepare himself he’s been following a structured training plan since the beginning of January, including up to three runs a week that are gradually increasing in length as he prepares for the 26.2-mile distance on Sunday, 26th April.
“This run means everything to me. It’s my way of remembering Anish, keeping his name alive and turning something heartbreaking into something positive,” said Neil.
“Every mile I run will be for him. Anish was not just a friend, he was family. I’d known him my whole life, so losing him so suddenly last year has been devastating.
“He was only 26, full of life, warmth, and kindness. His absence is felt every single day by everyone who loved and cared for him.”
Neil will be running alongside his dad, Nimesh, and Anish’s mum, Rakhee. Their aim is to raise awareness of how serious asthma can be and to support the vital work that Asthma + Lung UK does to help people who suffer from the condition.
“I’m so grateful to the local community, our customers, colleagues, and friends who have all been so supportive already,” added Neil.
“I’ve still got a way to go to reach my fundraising target, but there’s still time. I’m delighted to have raised more than £500 so far, but I’d love to top £2,500 because every pound will make a huge difference to the important work the charity does.”
Asthma + Lung UK supports 12 million people in the UK affected by lung conditions — including asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis — through research, advocacy and advice and support.
