Bringing creativity to Newark

Posted onPosted on 1st Dec

After a successful first year hosting well-attended events from the Newark Fun Palace to a Family Play Day and Pop-Up Dance weekend, Newark Creates is looking ahead to its new project for early 2022, The Play Passport.

This will be a health and wellbeing programme of artist-led workshops and the search has now started for an artist or arts organisation to apply to take part.

Photographers, musicians, crafters, graffiti artists, writers and more are all invited to get in touch with their proposals for a health and wellbeing creative community programme.

Applicants are encouraged to think outside the box and the successful applicant will both have their project funded and will be able to utilise locations like Newark Market Place, the Buttermarket, The Tree Health and Wellbeing, Newark Castle, parks, the National Civil War Centre and Newark Library.

Newark Creates is an ongoing cultural programme, developed as part of Newark High Street Heritage Action Zone and delivered by the Newark Cultural Consortium. It aims to make connections with established projects, supporting and promoting the creative organisations and businesses that exist in Newark.

It also hopes to develop the high street as an exciting place for people to experience the culture and identity of the town, celebrating its history, creating new experiences and making the high street more attractive, engaging and a vibrant place for people to live, work and spend time. Over the winter, the consortium will be focusing on fundraising and planning for the 2022 programme.

Carol Newman, director of culture at Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries, the lead partner in the consortium, said: “We’ve had such a fantastic first year, with successful events being attended by local people of all ages.

“We’ve got to know many of the amazing creative people and organisations in Newark, and are looking forward to connecting with more with our Play Passport project. We hope to see a diverse range of activities so please do get your applications in.”
