Birds Bakery raises the dough – £10,000

Birds Bakery has raised £10,000 for The Children’s Trust, following the success of its own Doughnut Week (12-19 September).

After the cancellation of National Doughnut Week in May, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the bakery decided to hold its own one week-long celebration to support the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury.

The family-run bakery sold 45,758 doughnuts throughout the week, donating 20p from every doughnut sold to the children’s charity.

Lesley Bird, chief operating officer at Birds Bakery, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have raised £9,152 for The Children’s Trust, which we topped up with an additional £848 to raise the total amount to a fantastic £10,000.

“The Children’s Trust is a charity that we have supported for a number of years and is incredibly close to our hearts. It is committed to raising £7 million a year to run vital services for children with brain injury and we are so pleased that we have been able to contribute to that total figure. We really hope it will make a difference to those in need.”

As part of Doughnut Week, the bakery – which has been running since 1919 – brought back two famous Birds specials for one week only, including the strawberry doughnut and the lemon and lime doughnut.

Lesley added: “We enjoyed seeing some of our old favourites back in our stores again and we are really grateful to those who have purchased our doughnuts to help us raise thousands of pounds for such a great cause.

“We also donated a number of doughnuts to nearby police, ambulance and fire stations, as our way of saying thank you for all their hard work, particularly in the recent challenging times.”
