International Women’s Day: The hospice nurses making a difference

Posted onPosted on 5th Mar

International Women’s Day on Sunday, 8th March is all about celebrating the achievements of women across the world and shining a light on those who really make a difference.

A perfect example are two women who do just that – Jade Davis and Bobbie Morton.

Jade and Bobbie work in the Hospice at Home team at Beaumond House Hospice Care in Newark. They provide palliative care that enables patients to remain at home and maintain a comfortable quality of life in their own familiar surroundings in the final weeks and months of their life.

Jade has been a nurse for 13 years and, like many who work in healthcare, has witnessed a great deal of change and struggle throughout her career. In previous roles, she has seen burnout first hand, felt the weight of stress and watched as corners were cut and sacrifices made – often at the expense of both staff wellbeing and patient care.

She said: “Before joining Beaumond House, I too had started to become part of that self-fulfilling prophecy: never having enough time to care, to learn or to truly listen. But in the last 18 months since joining Beaumond House, I have experienced something different, something transformative.

“Beaumond House has taught me more about human connection than possibly my entire nursing career up to this point. There’s something incredibly powerful about the moment a patient invites you into their world – it’s humbling and reminds you why you chose this path in the first place.”

And whilst Jade plays such a huge role in improving the quality of life of her patients, her patients also enhance her life in ways she couldn’t have imagined. She added: “They teach me how to be brave and unapologetically honest, even when I’m unsure of what to do or how to feel. They teach me to appreciate the little things and not dwell too long on the negatives.”

Bobbie joined Beaumond House just over three years ago, following a 14-year career in retail. Prior to joining the team, she had no care experience at all and learnt everything she now knows through her colleagues sharing their knowledge and experience. She said: “I’ve loved every minute of working at Beaumond House. It’s built my confidence and helped me try new things.”

Due to the nature of the role, one of the biggest challenges hospice staff face is the grief and sadness that comes with losing a patient. This can have a huge emotional impact on hospice staff and it’s important that employers have processes in place to support people through this.

This supportive environment is something that Bobbie has found at Beaumond House. She said: “It is a place of joy, laughter, love and – inevitably – sadness. But the support and care for the people, the families and the staff is amazing.”

After recently being awarded a contract to expand its Hospice at Home service across North Nottinghamshire, Beaumond House is recruiting for a variety of Hospice at Home roles.

If you’re interested in joining Jade and Bobbie in making a real, lasting difference to people with life-limiting illnesses, learn about the roles on offer at www.beaumondhouse.co.uk/about-us/vacancies
