Free guide to free fun

Posted onPosted on 20th Oct

Families across Newark and Sherwood are invited to embrace the colder months with the launch of The Big Cosy Guide, a seasonal celebration of free events, festive fun, and cosy adventures running from October through February.

Created by Newark and Sherwood District Council, the guide brings together a mix of activities and resources designed to help families connect, create, and celebrate the season, all in Newark and Sherwood. From nature walks and environmental workshops to puppet shows, museum trails, and pantomimes, the guide is packed with inspiration to brighten the colder months. It also includes at-home activities like baking, crafts, and activity sheets.

Printed copies of The Big Cosy Guide will be available soon at local pick-up points, including the National Civil War Centre, Dukeries Library, Clipstone Library, Newark Library, Edwinstowe Library, Sconce and Devon Park, and Vicar Water Country Park. Residents can also view the guide online at www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/big-cosy-guide/.

October Half Term is set to be a highlight of the season, with a line-up of activities for families to enjoy. From free outdoor adventures like ranger-led walks and nature sessions at Vicar Water Country Park, to free creative workshops including the Halloween-themed Cake Bake Challenge and the Seedheart puppet show, there’s something for every age and interest.

The Palace Theatre Newark will host two family-friendly performances, Flowers and Friendship Bracelets, a pop-inspired celebration of music, and Top Secret: The Magic of Science, a spectacular science-themed magic show. Families can also explore the National Civil War Centre, which offers free entry to Newark and Sherwood residents and those under 25, and features interactive exhibits, trails, and the new Kiddey Exhibition. The centre’s award-winning Nineteen20 Café is the perfect spot to refuel with homemade cakes, light lunches, and quality coffee.

Coun Rowan Cozens, deputy leader and portfolio holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at the council said: “We’re proud to offer such a rich and varied programme for families this October Half Term. Whether you’re exploring the fascinating history at the National Civil War Centre or enjoying a live show at the Palace Theatre, there’s something to spark curiosity and creativity in every child. These events reflect our commitment to making heritage and culture accessible, engaging and fun for all.”
