Residents from HC-One’s Kings Court Care Home in Newark enjoyed a memorable day out exploring Newark Air Museum, one of the UK’s largest volunteer-managed aviation museums.
Brian Patton, Jim Boot, Bill Kennett, Walter South and Raymond Smith viewed the museum’s collection of more than 80 aircraft.
The visit held particular significance for resident Brian, a legacy volunteer at the museum, who dedicated nearly 20 years of his life volunteering there after the loss of his wife, Elizabeth.
Brian was warmly welcomed by staff, who recognised his contribution to the museum and he was given free entry.
Rather than being guided by a staff member, Brian took the lead, showing his fellow residents and Kings Court team members around the aircrafts and engine rooms, sharing his knowledge and personal memories along the way.
The visit was emotional at times, as Brian reflected on his personal connection with the museum, including the aircraft in which his son tragically lost his life while serving in the RAF.
Brian was delighted to discover that he and fellow resident Bill Kennett had both served in the RAF at the same time, just two months apart.
Brian, who moved into Kings Court in April, has donated some of his rare aviation memorabilia to the museum’s collection.
“The trip took me back in time, not only to my time volunteering at the museum, but also to the time I spent in the RAF,” he said.
“It was so kind of Kings Court to organise this trip for us; they know how much the museum means to me and the amount of happy memories I have there. I’m now an honorary member of the museum and it was lovely to go back and see the planes, while reminiscing with my new friends.”
Catherine Skorin, front of house manager at Kings Court, added: “It was great to be able to give Brian and the other gentlemen the opportunity to visit the air museum.
“It’s such an iconic museum and they all had a wonderful time seeing the planes and sharing stories. Days like this are so important, not just for sparking memories, but also for building new ones together.”
