A multi-purpose community classroom is now open at Sconce and Devon Park in Newark, thanks to £24,000 grant funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The newly-constructed facility will serve as a dedicated space for schools, community organisations, and volunteer groups to participate in enhanced outdoor learning experiences and alternative education programmes.
In addition to its learning function, the classroom will act as a central hub for volunteer co-ordination and the hosting of a wide range of community events.
The initiative has been delivered by Newark and Sherwood District Council, in partnership with Newark Town Council and championed by Sconce and Devon Park Community Group, whose 25 volunteers hold regular meetings to discuss how they can support elements of the park management and its landscape.
Coun Simon Forde, portfolio holder for climate and the environment, said: “Creating a space that encourages outdoor learning and connection with nature, will help foster a deeper understanding of the natural world and why it’s so important to protect it for future generations.
“We are really pleased to have worked in partnership with Newark Town Council and Sconce and Devon Park Community Group to bring the original vision into being. With the support of the Shared Prosperity Fund, this facility will empower people locally to take an active role in climate action and learn more about biodiversity and sustainable living.”
Coun Dawn Campbell, town council leader, added: “We are very pleased to have worked with Newark and Sherwood District Council in bringing this project to fruition. The classroom sits in a really peaceful green space and will serve a wide range of people with outdoor learning opportunities.
“Traditional education settings don’t work for everyone and so for those with a passion for the great outdoors and the environment this is a very welcome new facility for Newark.”
