Countdown to dragon boat festival

Posted onPosted on 10th Sep

Thirty-six crews made up of local organisations and groups will take to the water for the Newark Dragon Boat Race on Sunday.

The festival, now in its fifth year, is jointly organised by the Children’s Bereavement Centre and Beaumond House Hospice Care – and is hoping to attract thousands of visitors to the town.

Racing starts at 10am on Sunday, 15th September, with a series of heats testing the teams for a place in the finals. The nine fastest from the heats will go through to three semi-finals, where there will be a trophy for the winning team.

As well as the racing there will a chance to meet Inferno, a smoke-breathing dragon, and Sapphire, a baby dragon, sponsored by Inspire. Prizes will be on offer at traditional fairground games on Riverside Park.

Also look out for a climbing wall, inflatables, face painting, and a variety of food and drink stalls.

Live entertainment on stage will come from Barnby Road Primary Academy choir, AJ’s School of Dance and Performing Arts, Julia Higgins, Clive Rudd, Andy McKay and Dicksy, Matt Shephardson, MF Dance, and the Rogue Shanty Buoys.
